The  OBPS began in the mid 2010s after its founding members noticed a need for a searchable repository for ocean best practices. 

Key moments in OBPS history include :

2014 The first version of the repository was released as the IODE Ocean Data Practices Repository.
2016 The best practices working group was formed. Its members ultimately founded the OBPS. 
2017 The first OBPS website was launched (oceanbestpractices.net). 
2017 The first OBPS workshop was held in Paris. 
2018 The first articles in the OBPS journal research topic were published. 
2019 The OBPS was adopted as an IOC project and co-sponsored by IODE and GOOS, setting the initiative up for long-term success. 
2021 OceanPractices for the Decade was approved as a UN Ocean Decade programme. 
2023 Initiation of Federated Network Development
2023 Standards programme for Digital Twins of the Ocean Initiated
